SIGNAL CHAIN
I. Distortion
II. Chorus
III. Phaser
IV. Delay

Program note: Inspired by several eras of rock music, each movement of SIGNAL CHAIN interpolates a popular song or replicates a specific style of rock while using a different pedal in the signal chain. Structurally, the piece takes loose inspiration from Baroque-era dance suites.

behind the screen
Program note: The fixed media for behind the screen takes a well-known orchestral excerpt for the bass clarinet, and slows it down several times over while also looping and manipulating the sound. I produced the fixed media first, then wrote counterpoint over it. This specific performance will feature a new experimentation with effects pedals being incorporated into the live performance.

Time Traveler
Program Note: Time Traveler is a work for unaccompanied bass clarinet that is constructed of melodic fragments of canonic solo, orchestral, and chamber bass clarinet literature. These melodic fragments appear both in it's entirety or as a sub-fragment, and are often directly combined with other melodic fragments. Composers whose works have been quoted include Bach, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Khachaturian, Bozza, Dolphy/Holliday, David Lang, and Marc Mellits.

Sassy as Hell
Program Note: Commissioned by Julia Lougheed, the title for "Sassy as Hell" was taken from a quote of hers during a conversation we were having in Denver at ClarinetFest in 2023. The piece is inspired by disco and is in three sections: "Sassy," a full-on disco track, "Hell," a darker, demonic section that makes heavy use of samples, and "Sassy as Hell," where the samples coalesce into the disco groove for an exciting finale.
